Relief Printmaking Course Description:

In this 8-week course, you will learn how to design your own artistic images, carve them into linoleum blocks, and print them – by hand-burnishing and by using an etching press! Learning the hand-burnishing technique will allow you to make prints at your own kitchen table in the future. We will start with basic printing skills and then move on to creating and carving your first 1-layer design.

After you’ve printed your first design, we’ll explore more advanced processes, including reductive relief and creating a design from multiple lino blocks. As a class, we’ll view and discuss everyone’s work, and you’ll have the opportunity to collaborate with classmates. We’ll also cover some history and learn about design principles, a little color theory, and contemporary printmaking.

This course can be individually tailored as needed (a benefit of the small class size). That makes it suitable for a wide range of makers, from beginners with zero art background to experienced artists who want to try out relief printmaking – or get back into it!

Come Out & Print! What’s That?

My vision for Come Out & Print (CO&P; “coap” – rhymes with “soap”) is to provide access to tools and an etching press for folks who are not currently taking a course. (The etching press can also print linocut and other relief blocks.) In addition to material resources, I aim for CO&P to nurture the special feeling of community and camaraderie which thrives in a printmaking studio where multiple folks with different interests, methods, and experience levels are all sharing the space and interacting together.

When CO&P is scheduled during printmaking course times, I’ll be primarily focused on course participants, but I’ll be available to answer technical questions, troubleshoot issues, or to help with the press. You’ll certainly be welcome to engage with folks taking the course, chat, discuss your work, etc.

I am looking for folks to commit to attending at least four of the eight CO&P sessions in March & April, and to pay a 35% deposit (at registration) of the total amount they intend to pay on the sliding scale. They would then pay the balance on the first day they attend.

If you commit to four or five sessions, but you end up attending more often – that’s great! And there’s no need to commit to specific dates – just that you’ll attend at least four times. Come when you can!

For all the details about CO&P, please download this PDF or email me at Lena@rhizomeartstudio.com.

Is This Printmaking Course Really for Me?

  • You’re welcome to take this course as a social activity with a friend or loved one – or show up solo and meet new people!
  • Maybe you got to make a relief print one time and you’ve never had the chance to try it again – until now.
  • Maybe you’re interested in studying art in college, and you want to learn more about different specializations, like printmaking.
  • Do you have a lot of past experience with art? You could approach this course as an artistic “reboot” to jumpstart your creativity!
